Upcoming hearthstone changes

Upcoming hearthstone changes DEFAULT

The United in Stormwind expansion has already felt the wrath of the nerf bat.

It looks like the Hearthstone team wants to further refine the United in Stormwinds meta with patch 21.3

Earlier today, the official Hearthstone Twitter account revealed that patch 21.3 would arrive Tuesday and that it would contain changes to Constructed and Battlegrounds. Thankfully, we didn’t have to speculate long on which Constructed classes we could expect to be changed.

Shortly after the official tweet went out, Hearthstone lead designer Alec Dawson chimed in to give the community a bit more info. Players can expect five nerfs that will affect Warlock, Shaman, and Demon Hunter. In addition to the nerfs, there will be one redesign, one ban, and seven buffs.

The redesigned card will belong to the Priest class, while the ban hammer aims to strike Warlock. The seven buffs will be spread across the Hunter, Mage, and Warrior classes. As stated in his Tweet, Dawson says the nerfs are designed to slow things down further and the buffs aim to empower recent archetypes that didn’t hit as well as the team wanted.

Since the official patch notes for 21.3 aren’t up, we don’t know exactly which cards will be changed. We’ll keep you updated on the list of balanced cards when it becomes available.

Updates to Hearthstone are made in the form of patches. This page lists all Hearthstone patches to date.

New patches for Hearthstone are released regularly, fixing bugs and adding new cards, card backs and game features. Patches for desktop clients are downloaded automatically from the Battle.net launcher prior to launching the game, and players are required to update to each new patch in order to launch Hearthstone.

Larger patches are released sparingly, adding cards and data for new expansions and adventures, or more rarely major new features. Between these, smaller patches are more commonly released, fixing bugs and adding less-critical content such as new card backs, alternate heroes and cards and data for Tavern Brawls.

Notes[]

  • The developers try to release major features in separate patches to new content such as adventures and expansions, in order to reduce the risk of problems due to the changes.[1]

Version conflicts[]

Each patch represents a different version of Hearthstone, incompatible with previous versions. Because of this, players using different patches cannot be matched against each other, in order to avoid version conflict and missing data during matches. This usually only happens due to using different platforms, or because a player has not logged out and updated since the new patch has been released.

While players are required to update to the latest patch as soon as it is released on their current platform, because patches are released at different times for different platforms, it is possible to update one device to a new patch while the other is not yet able to update. Once an account has been updated to a new patch, the player will not be able to access the account on any device that has not yet updated to that patch, effectively locking out all other platforms until that patch is also released for them.

Use of older versions appears to only be permitted during the rollout period, while the patch is being rolled out to each platform in turn. Once all platforms have access to the latest patch, clients with the older version will be prevented from playing until they have updated to the latest version.[2]

The complexity of releasing on multiple platforms can cause delays to the release of patches.[3] Designer Dean Ayala explains, "In order to patch simultaneously on PC/Mobile there are a number of things that have to be submit and approved being we can release a new patch to the public," with the result that card changes are often postponed until the new patch is ready for all platforms.[3]

Patch numbers[]

Each patch's version number charts its position in the game's history. Currently, the first part of the number is changed for each major release (expansion or adventure). From Blackrock Mountain to The League of Explorers the second part was changed with each patch, reseting to 0 at the start of each new release, but Whispers of the Old Gods has seen the second digit increased more erratically. The third digit was unused until Whispers of the Old Gods, but seems to reflect smaller progressions. The remaining digits are increased at a more erratic pace, likely reflecting revisions to in-house builds not released to the public. These digits do not increase the first three parts of the version number, and are essentially superfluous. Colloquially, patches are often referred to by the first two sections, such as "Patch 3.2". Note that these rules are not always followed; some patches fail to increase numbers, or increase numbers without including appropriate changes.

The system used until Whispers of the Old Gods was similar to that used in games like World of Warcraft, although without the division between major and minor patches, without the use of the third part of the number, and with additional digits. In comparison, "Patch 4.1.0.10956" would likely be titled "Patch 4.0.1".

Prior to the adoption of a standardised format with Blackrock Mountain neither the first nor second parts of the number were regularly increased. The game's version numbers initially began with 1.0.0. This was changed to 1.1.0 after the release of Curse of Naxxramas, and again to 1.2.0 with Patch 1.2.0.6485. The first digit was raised from 1 to 2 with the pre-patch for the game's first expansion, Goblins vs Gnomes, but was not increased to 3 until the game's second expansion, The Grand Tournament. In September 2014 Yong Woo had stated that the developers were still "tuning" their version number process.[4] After setting a consistent patch number trend with earlier content, Whispers of the Old Gods saw sparse and erratic increases to patch numbers, entirely breaking the established pattern. The expansion's Patch 5.2.2.13807 also saw the third digit increased for the first time, previously never having had any value other than 0.

Patch numbers were first stated in official blogs with Patch 1.0.0.4243. With Patch 5.2.0.13619 the official blogs ceased to state patch numbers, instead referring to each new patch as a "Hearthstone Update".[5]

21.3 Patch Notes

Hearthstone

Blizzard Entertainment

21.3 Patch Notes

The 21.3 patch, releasing tomorrow, includes several updates across Standard, Wild, Battlegrounds, Duels, and Arena.

Standard and Wild Updates

The following cards have been adjusted down in power level.

Irebound Brute
  • Old: [Costs 7] New: [Costs 8]

DEMONHUNTER_SW_037_enUS_IreboundBrute-64373_NORMAL.pngcardchanges_arrow.pngDEMONHUNTER_SW_037_enUS_IreboundBrute-64373_NORMAL.png

Dev Comment: Irebound Brute was playable a bit earlier than intended on average. Pushing it back a turn should soften extreme turns.

Mindrender Illucia
  • Old: Battlecry: Swap hands and decks with your opponent until your next turn. New: Battlecry: Replace your hand with a copy of your opponent’s until end of turn.

PRIEST_SCH_159_enUS_MindrenderIllucia-59643_NORMAL.pngcardchanges_arrow.pngPRIEST_SCH_159_enUS_MindrenderIllucia-59643_NORMAL.png

Dev Comment: With the refinement of Shadow Priest in recent weeks, Mindrender Illucia has been overperforming in the archetype, in an unintended way. Instead of being used as a late game disruption tool, Shadow Priests have been using Illucia as an early game play to essentially skip the opponent’s turn. This change is aimed at removing that problematic gameplay from Illucia, while still keeping her in a similar space with her effect.

Perpetual Flame
  • Old: [Costs 1] New: [Costs 2]

SHAMAN_WC_020_enUS_PerpetualFlame-63098_NORMAL.pngcardchanges_arrow.pngSHAMAN_WC_020_enUS_PerpetualFlame-63098_NORMAL.png

Dev Comment: Perpetual Flame is a very efficient removal tool for Questline Shaman. Going up one mana here will give board-based decks a better shot against Shaman in the early- and mid-game.

Command the Elements
  • Tame the Flames (the third portion of the Questline)
    • Old: Play 2 cards with Overload. Reward: Stormcaller Bru’kan. New: Play 3 cards with Overload. Reward: Stormcaller Bru’kan.

SHAMAN_SW_031t2_enUS_TametheFlames-64324_NORMAL.pngcardchanges_arrow.pngSHAMAN_SW_031t2_enUS_TametheFlames-64324_NORMAL.png

Dev Comment: Slowing down the speed at which Questline Shamans can get their final reward should open up more room for counterplay, particularly from slower strategies.

The Demon Seed
  • The Demon Seed (part 1 of the Questline)
    • Old: Take 6 damage on your turns. Reward: Lifesteal. Deal 3 damage to the enemy hero. New: Take 8 damage on your turns. Reward: Lifesteal. Deal 3 damage to the enemy hero.
  • Establish the Link (part 2 of the Questline)
    • Old: Take 7 damage on your turns. Reward: Lifesteal. Deal 3 damage to the enemy hero. New: Take 8 damage on your turns. Reward: Lifesteal. Deal 3 damage to the enemy hero.
  • Additionally, The Demon Seed is now banned in Wild.

WARLOCK_SW_091_enUS_TheDemonSeed-64900_NORMAL.pngcardchanges_arrow.pngWARLOCK_SW_091_enUS_TheDemonSeed-64900_NORMAL.png

WARLOCK_SW_091t_enUS_EstablishtheLink-64901_NORMAL.pngcardchanges_arrow.pngWARLOCK_SW_091t_enUS_EstablishtheLink-64901_NORMAL.png

Dev Comment: After monitoring both Standard and Wild since the release of Stormwind, we’ve decided to both increase the damage required on the first two steps for Standard and ban the Questline in Wild. In Standard, we are slightly upping the amount of damage needed to complete the Questline to slow down the speed at which Tamsin locks up games. In Wild, where there are many more efficient self-damaging cards, The Demon Seed can be completed at an unintentionally fast rate. We are banning the card to protect the format from the problematic gameplay it created. When The Demon Seed rotates to Wild, we will unban it and reposition the card to be more appropriate for the format.

Runed Mithril Rod
  • Old: [Costs 3] New: [Costs 4]

WARLOCK_SW_003_enUS_RunedMithrilRod-63677_NORMAL.pngcardchanges_arrow.pngWARLOCK_SW_003_enUS_RunedMithrilRod-63677_NORMAL.png

Dev Comment: Runed Mithril Rod is overperforming relative to mana-generation sources in other classes, mainly due to Warlock’s card draw potential. Going up one mana will bring Runed Mithril Rod’s power level more in line with what other classes have access to.

The cards listed above will be eligible for a full dust refund for 2 weeks after the 21.3 patch goes live.

The following cards have been adjusted up in power level.

Dev Comments: We’re looking at opening up a few more strategies for some of the less-diverse classes and underrepresented archetypes in the Standard metagame. These buffs are aimed at some of the weaker archetypes to make them more appealing options to play with. Some of these changes are on the lighter side, in anticipation of the mini-set coming in the next major patch after the patch launching Mercenaries.

Leatherworking Kit
  • Old: [Costs 2] New: [Costs 1]

HUNTER_SW_457_enUS_LeatherworkingKit-64964_NORMAL.pngcardchanges_arrow.pngHUNTER_SW_457_enUS_LeatherworkingKit-64964_NORMAL.png

Duels Updates

  • Party Replacements, Rally the Troops, and Oops, All Spells! have all been moved from Passive Treasure Pool 2 to Pool 2 Ultra Rare.
  • All Together Now has been moved from Passive Treasure Pool 1 to Pool 2.
  • Voidtouched Attendant is now banned from deck creation.

Arena Updates

Ramming Mount will no longer be draftable in Arena. Additionally, we discovered a bug with some card offering rates. We’ve addressed that bug and will be re-adjusting the offering rates to match the intended rates, which should help move all classes closer to the 50% class winrate.

(UPDATED) Bug Fixes & Game Improvements

  • Fixed a bug causing crashes when the friends list was opened.
  • Fixed a bug where friends could sometimes not be challenged.
  • Fixed a bug where Maestra of the Masquerade would sometimes have you start the game as a Rogue (not her best disguise).
  • Fixed a bug that prevented Grand Magus Antonidas from hitting Stealth targets and resulted in Antonidas potentially hitting the caster’s own face if the enemy hero was in Stealth.
  • Fixed a bug where Tradeable cards would keep enchantments if shuffled into your deck by something other than Tradeable.
  • Fixed bugs where cards like Razormane Battleguard would not properly reduce the cost of cards after Celestial Alignment was played.
  • Fixed a bug where Barrens Scavenger’s cost could be reduced below 1 while you had 10 or fewer cards in your deck.
  • Fixed a bug where Highlord Fordragon would trigger on minions that were not in play.
  • Fixed bugs where cards like Master of Realities and Whelp Smuggler would have an incorrect number of triggers.
  • Fixed a bug where swapping a Tavern Tier 6 minion (such as with Arcane Alteration, Malygos’s Hero Power) would sometimes cause it to disappear.
  • Fixed a visual bug that caused enemy Tavern Tiers to show as reset to Tavern Tier 1.
  • (NEW) Fixed a bug where chat settings were not being saved in the Hearthstone client.

SO MANY NERFS!! Big changes to 8 cards! BG stuff too!

Hearthstone’s balancing team is bringing many changes to various game modes, plus some bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, in tomorrow’s Patch 21.3.

For Standard and Wild modes, the highlights of the update are Blizzard’s decision to both increase the damage required in the first two steps for Standard and banning the Warlock Questline in Wild. There are many more efficient self-damaging cards in Wild, according to Blizzard, making it possible for The Demon Seed to be completed at a fast rate. So the devs are banning it to protect the format from problematic gameplay. Besides that, a nerf to Runed Mithril Rod may also have an indirect effect on the Quest’s power.

The update even includes a little buff for some key cards to Pirate Warrior and Hero Power Mage that could lead to them seeing more play. Battlegrounds is receiving numerous balance updates to heroes and minions, too.

Here are all the changes within Hearthstone Patch 21.3.
