Instructions

  • Engage students with the topic by asking them to open Microsoft Word and allowing them to navigate freely for three minutes. At the end of this time, ask them to share experiences, questions, and comments.
  • Tell students they will be learning to use this program, then ask them to consider why learning to use Microsoft Word will be a benefit to them. Share answers, then display or distribute copies of the lesson Basic Guide to Microsoft Word: Toolbars & Document Views.
  • Read the first section 'Microsoft Word' together with students. Have them open a New Document.
  • Now read the section 'Microsoft Word Menus' together. Have students preview the menus briefly by running their mouse across each but not opening any options under. Preview and predict what each tab does.
  • Read the remainder of the lesson with students, exploring each component as the lesson guides. Discuss features and allow students to ask questions, but instruct them to refrain from going further than exploration for now.
  • Ask - Which feature will you use to:
    • Determine margins?
    • Create page borders?
    • Check spelling?
    • Add a table of contents?
    • Preview the document?
  • When students have a solid feel for the program, read the 'Lesson Summary' together. Answer any remaining questions.

Activity

  • Students will now create and save a document independently.
  • Instruct students to practice components of this lesson by creating a document using as many features as possible. Model an example by typing a sentence and changing font size, adding page color and borders, checking spelling, inserting clip art, etc.
  • Allow students to create their document. As they work, walk around to offer guidance and support. Help students learn how to troubleshoot, undo and redo as necessary.
  • When students are finished, help them print and/or save their work.
  • Give students the lesson quiz to check comprehension.

Extensions

  • Require students to use Microsoft Word to write essays and work assignments.
  • Research the history of word processing with students.
  • If possible, allow students to use a typewriter and compare/contrast the experience.

This is an introductory lesson for a word processing class using Microsoft Word. It may be accomplished in one hour with up to 25 students in a computer lab.

1Introduction to Microsoft Word Lesson Plan Prior to Class Student Computer Setup: 1. Copy the Student Folder onto each desktop. 2. Prepare printed copies of the following: Introduction to Microsoft Word Student Manual (from Student Folder) Introduction to Microsoft Word Session Survey Introduction to Microsoft Word Certificate if pre-printing certificates Instructor Computer Setup: Ensure that the LCD projector and computer are working properly. Complete the Student Computer Setup on the presentation computer. Open the following documents on your computer and then minimize them so only your desktop appears. Microsoft Word Presentation Cover Letter (from Student Folder) Screen Components Quiz (from Student Folder) In Class Tell students that Introduction to Microsoft Word is a two (2) to four hour course designed to familiarize students with terminology, screen components and the most commonly used functions offered by Microsoft Word.

2 Emphasis will be placed on proper document formatting techniques and file naming and file management conventions. Complete introductions. Ask if any have prior experience. Explain that we will only be going over basics because this is an introductory course. Ask about their ie: What do you hope to learn today? Maximize the Introduction to Microsoft Word Presentation (PPT). Go through the PPT slides using the information below to guide you. Ask students to take notes in student handbook (dotted lines are provided in the handbook for this purpose) when necessary. ENCOURAGE students to stop you if they have any questions. It is used primarily to enter, edit, format, save, retrieve and print documents. Additional Online Resources and Information in Student Manual Show the student the Microsoft Word Online Resources document on the screen. Have them find the document in the student folder on their desktop and open it. Ensure they can use the Ctrl/Mouse Click to open the links. Then, depending on the student skill levels and time constraints, you can choose to cover any additional material in the student manual or on the resource list. ASSIST STUDENTS WITH COPYING THEIR STUDENT FOLDER FILES TO THEIR OWN USB DRIVE OR THEIR OWN ONLINE DRIVE. If you have not used a lesson plan template before to help you plan your lessons consistently, then you may not have been working as efficiently as you possibly could do.

This blank lesson plan format template can be used by anyone who has Microsoft Word 2003 or later installed on a PC.

Most home and business users, including teachers, trainers and instructors, have access to a version of Microsoft Word. It is probably one of the most frequently used desktop applications for producing letters, forms and other types of written documents, including lesson plans.

Make sure that you save your template somewhere safe.

Using the Lesson Plan Format template

When you open the Microsoft Word template file it will open as a new document ready to be used. This will happen each time that you open it.

The document has been protected to only allow the user to complete the grey boxes. These grey boxes are known as Form Fields. You can tab from one form field to the next or use your mouse to navigate between them.

You will not be able to amend any other part of the document unless you unprotect the document first. To find out more about amending my Microsoft Word Templates click here.

Simply enter the relevant lesson information into each form field.

I recommend that you give your completed lesson plan a unique Lesson Plan reference. This will help you locate and identify it again in the future.

If the lesson plan is going to make up part of a course or module, then enter a Course Reference that uniquely identifies the course. If it can be used as part of more than one course, simply hit return after entering the first course reference and the Course Reference box will expand to allow entry of further references. A diligently completed lesson plan format not only helps prepare for a single lesson, it can be used again and again in the future. It can detail everything required to help deliver a quality lesson.

It is an invaluable aid. Why reinvent the wheel each time the same subject or activity is delivered? Use my lesson plan format template to get started. I provide the template. You provide the knowledge and content.

Review your lesson plan. You may be able to improve it.

You may want to tweak it here and there to fit the level of your students better.

You may want to amend the task and activity timings to better fit into a lesson duration.

You may want to review the overall lesson objective.

But now you have a well organised, completed and detailed lesson plan, planning for future lessons just got a whole lot easier.

If you cannot go to a lesson due to illness etc. but you do not want the class to be cancelled, you could give a copy of the relevant lesson plan to a substitute teacher, trainer or instructor, if one is available. This ensures that your students are disturbed as little as possible and that continuity from one class to the next is maintained, something that your students will recognise and appreciate - especially if they are paying customers!

Saving a Completed Lesson Plan

OK so you have completed your lesson plan. You now have two things to think about;

1. where you are going to save it

2. what name will you save it as

You want to ensure that you save it in a safe place and somewhere that makes logical sense. If the lesson plan forms part of a course or module then it makes sense that you save this lesson plan with all other related lesson plans.

At this stage you will want to put some thought into what name you will give the file. Here's where that unique Lesson Plan Reference I suggested comes into use. If you begin the file name with the Lesson Plan Reference, followed by a hyphen and the Lesson Title, when you view the files saved in a folder directory they will be well organised and easy to locate.

To use a real example, as part of one of my previous jobs in a law firm, I designed training courses and materials and delivered lessons to staff on how to use the companies case management system. I knew the system well as I had designed and built the work flows and business rules within it. I really had to deliver the training in bite sized chunks as it could be quite intimidating for staff (my students) who had not used this type of case management system before.

When planning the training sessions I of course used my lesson plan format template to ensure that I planned my lessons well and consistently. I created a number of folders into which I would save the completed lesson plans. I soon realised that if I named the files logically and clearly I could get them to appear in the folder directories in the order that I would more than likely be using them.

The Lesson Plan Reference was key in helping me to do this.

If I defined Lesson Plan references that were logical and sequential, entering them as the first part of the file name when saving the lesson plan and then entering the lesson title afterwards, I would always be able to find the lesson plan easily and quickly.

CLASS-TEMPLATE TIP

When viewing the files saved within a folder directory organize the folders contents by List.

The files contained within the folder will be displayed as a vertical list ordered alphabetically and numerically by their file name.

The list can be displayed with the file names displayed ascending or descending.

It's much easier to see what files you have in a directory when viewed as a vertical list rather than looking at several file icons running across a screen.

Changes to the Lesson Plan Format template

In the footer of the lesson plan format template the following document information can be found;

  • the file name
  • the date it was last amended
  • who it was last amended by
  • the publisher - class-templates.com

If the blank lesson plan template is amended at any time the document information will be updated. The amended template will be available to download from this web page. Previous versions of the Microsoft Word template will not be available.
