Netflix Is Developing A Modern Three Musketeers Movie

Netflix announces that they are in the process of developing a modern day adaptation of the iconic 19th century novel, The Three Musketeers.

Netflix is developing a modern Three Musketeersmovie. The popular streaming platform has been consistently in the news as of late, as it continuous to evolve and expand. After securing three Oscars with Roma, Netflix’s commitment to creating original content, as well as developing new films and programs, seems to be progressing at an impressive rate, with competitors battling to keep pace.

As the challenge to remain at the top of the subscription streaming service providers intensifies, numerous services are often looking to find success with older, established IPs such as Sailor Moon at Hulu or Peanuts at Apple. Netflix has already proven themselves adept at this concept, having given Archie comics characters new life with its popularChilling Adventures of Sabrina series, as well as bringing back beloved series like Arrested Development. With so many stories offering potential for new directions and takes, now seems just as good a time as any to dig a little deeper and further intrigue subscribers.

With that concept in mind, Netflix has decided to draw on a story that has proven itself timeless. THR is reporting that a modern feature film adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ classic 1844 novel The Three Musketeers is currently in development at Netflix. Exactly what year the modernized version will take place in is currently unknown, but Netflix is describing the action-adventure film as having a Mission: Impossible tone.

The story of The Three Musketeers follows a young Frenchman called d’Artagnan who wants nothing more than to join the famous Musketeers of the Guard in Paris. The fighting company existed as an army of the French monarchy, and when d’Artagnan is rejected from joining their ranks, he manages to befriend the Guard’s three most well-known and admired musketeers, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Once in their company, d’Artagnan joins the trio on a variety of adventures. Arguably one of the most adapted stories in history since its initial publication, The Three Musketeers has been realized on stage, television, in animated form, in video games and tabletop games, comic books, and even with a modern day, gender swapped, LGTBQ web series. In short, this is an IP with a seemingly endless array of possibilities.

It’s interesting to consider what Netflix could do with something as malleable as the story of The Three Musketeers. The fact that it’s being described as Mission: Impossible in tone is intriguing, though unless the film casts a proven, substantial name in its lead, it’s going to be very hard to maintain that comparison. Fans of the Mission: Impossible series love it for its globe-trotting storytelling and high-intensity, death-defying Tom Cruise stunts, so unless this new adaptation of The Three Musketeers can compete on that level, Netflix may be doing more harm than good by making such a bold initial comparison.

The Musketeers

For other uses, see Musketeer (disambiguation).

The Musketeers is a BBC period action drama programme based on the characters from Alexandre Dumas's 1844 novel The Three Musketeers[1] and co-produced by BBC America and BBC Worldwide.[1] The first episode was shown on BBC One on 19 January 2014.[2] It stars Tom Burke as Athos, Santiago Cabrera as Aramis, Howard Charles as Porthos, Luke Pasqualino as d'Artagnan, with Tamla Kari as Constance d’Artagnan, Maimie McCoy as Milady de Winter, Ryan Gage as King Louis XIII and Alexandra Dowling as Queen Anne. It also features Peter Capaldi as Cardinal Richelieu in the first series, Marc Warren as Comte de Rochefort in the second series,[3] and Rupert Everett as the Marquis de Feron for the final series.

Jessica Pope and Adrian Hodges produced the show for the BBC. The programme was largely filmed in the Czech Republic. In February 2015, it was announced that the show had been renewed for a third series,[4] which was announced in April 2016 to be the last.[5] The third series premiered in multiple countries first, before premiering in the UK on 28 May 2016, and concluding on 1 August 2016.[6][7]

Plot[edit]

In 1630s Paris, Athos, Aramis and Porthos are a group of highly trained musketeers commanded by Captain Treville who meet d'Artagnan, a skillful farm boy with hopes of becoming a musketeer. The series follows them as they fight to protect King and country.

Production[edit]

Conception[edit]

The BBC had been developing the idea of a new series based on The Three Musketeers since as far back as 2007, when the project was envisaged as a Saturday evening show to run between series of Doctor Who.[8] The eventual production of the series was finally announced in 2012, with Adrian Hodges in charge of the project.[9]

Filming[edit]

Paris was not considered as a filming location because over the decades, development had detracted from the grittier architecture wanted. Dublin was also considered before settling on the Czech Republic, which suffered little damage during the two world wars. Many historic buildings were intact and privately owned stately homes were rented for filming.

Filming for the series took place mainly in Doksany, 30 kilometres north-west of Prague, where a Parisian square, a number of streets and the musketeers' garrison were constructed. A disused convent had additional sets constructed including taverns, bedrooms and mortuary.[10]

Casting[edit]

During filming of the first series Peter Capaldi learned that he had been given the role of the Twelfth Doctor in Doctor Who.[11] The show's executive producer Jessica Pope commented that they would have to "recalibrate" plans for a prospective second series, in order to accommodate Capaldi now being unable to reprise his role.[11]Marc Warren joined the cast for the second series.[12]The Musketeers was originally planned to be broadcast in 2013, but was later delayed until 2014.[13]

Reception[edit]

The Musketeers initially received mixed reviews from critics. Reviewing the third episode of the drama, Morgan Jeffery, writing for Digital Spy, praised the development of the characters, stating that there was a "real feeling of growth" and that it delivered "something a little more substantial".[14]Den of Geek writer Rob Kemp also gave a positive review, stating that The Musketeers had "won a lot of people over with its fun and adventurous take on this well-loved story", but also wrote that some of the dramatic elements felt "shoe horned and deliberate". Overall, Kemp had hope for the series and praised the change in focus in the third episode, saying that the "time was definitely right to start to explore the characters", before going on to say that the series would have "plenty more opportunities for the Musketeers to hit their more (and hopefully, better) dramatic strides".[15]

Upon its premiere on BBC America, Alessandra Stanley of The New York Times gave the drama a positive review, calling the series "not at all bad, just a bit old-fashioned". She also praised the updates made to the series, writing "purists may be dismayed that Mr. Hodges took so many liberties with the original plot, but purists are rarely any fun".[16]
