How to make your patio cooler in the summer swelter

A cold Negroni on the porch sounds awfully enticing — until you open the door and are assaulted by a blast of muggy, oppressive air. High heat and humidity will make even the most nature-loving homeowner want to stay indoors, crank up the air conditioning and not emerge until the leaves change color.

But what’s the point of having a patio if you can’t enjoy it during the summer? To help make even the most miserable August days a bit more bearable, we talked to some experts who shared their favorite tips, tricks and gadgets.

The first tip is the most obvious: Make it shadier. According to Anthony Wilder, principal of Anthony Wilder Design/Build, the easiest and cheapest way to block the sun is to hang a shade sail or canopy. “It’s a simple piece of canvas that you attach to your home and to a pole out in the grass. And they’re affordable. You can pick one up at Ikea for a pittance,” he says referring to the Dyning Canopy ($25).

If you’re looking for a more high-tech solution, lifestyle expert and HGTV contributor Carley Knobloch suggests the ShadeCraft Blossom umbrella ($7,500), a luxury parasol that contains solar-powered lighting, speakers and a charging station. You can raise and lower it with your smartphone, and it even closes automatically if it senses high wind. The company also makes another smart parasol, the Sunflower, that constantly alters its position to block the sun’s rays, so you never have to get up from your lounge chair to readjust the angle. The futuristic umbrella has an even steeper price tag: $10,000.

“It knows where you live and it automatically follows the sun throughout the day, just like a real sunflower,” she says.

The ShadeCraft Blossom umbrella is a luxury parasol that contains solar-powered lighting, speakers and a charging station. (ShadeCraft)

Come fall, the brand will introduce the Bloom ($459), a device that can attach to your existing umbrella, turning it into a smart parasol equipped with charging station, speakers and wind sensors.

Smart screens are another tech-savvy way to keep out the sun, but you’ll need an existing structure, such as a porch or a veranda, to install them. Knobloch used them on an HGTV Smart Home and became such a believer that she put them in her own home. Made by Phantom Screens, the motorized retractable screens (starting at $3,300, including installation, for a 16-foot-by-10-foot opening) offer both UV and bug protection and can be raised or lowered by remote control, so you have the option of either an open-air space or a screened room.

For an overhead shade solution that feels more organic, Wilder suggests building a simple arbor structure. “Wisteria, which can reach 30 feet after it’s established, provides great coverage,” he says. “Unlike a structure with a roof, there are no leaves in the winter, so you get sunlight and warmth streaming through when you need it; it’s a win-win.”

Big Ass Fans’ Haiku outdoor ceiling fan creates a natural-feeling breeze. (Big Ass Fans)

Making the air feel more comfortable is an ongoing challenge when humidity is a factor. Outdoor fans can help. Knobloch likes Big Ass Fans’ Haiku outdoor ceiling fan (from $1,494). “They have smart technology, they’re attractive and they come in custom finishes that don’t feel overly industrial,” she says. “You set it so it kicks in at a certain temperature, and it does a cool, whooshing motion that emulates a natural breeze.”

For homeowners or renters with patios or decks, pedestal fans can be a godsend. Knobloch recommends GreenTech Environmental’s Multi-Directional Variable Speed Oscillating Fan ($99).

One more tip: If you’re tempted to turn on the fan before you head outside, don’t bother. Because fans don’t actually cool the air — instead they move air over your skin, which makes you feel cooler — it’s a waste to run them when you’re not there. Along with increasing your comfort level, fans offer an added perk: Their blowing air also makes it harder for mosquitoes to land on their prey.

Wilder also offers two low-cost, old-school tricks to keep cool that require little more than water and air. “Hang outdoor draperies on a porch and wet them down with a mist of water, then turn on a fan,” he says. “The air will automatically feel about 15 degrees cooler, which can make a significant difference on a hot day.”

DIY enthusiasts can take this heat-beating method a step further by creating a cooling system with products that can be found in the hardware store, including screw-in eye hooks and a drip or soaker hose. Wilder suggests screwing the hooks along the inside perimeter of a porch several inches above outdoor draperies. “Thread the drip hose, which has a ton of microneedle holes, through the rings of the hooks,” he says. “Let it gently drip water onto the canvas while a fan is running on the porch. It’s like a DIY air conditioner.”

Another way to ensure outdoor comfort is to guard against hot surfaces. Chances are you’ve walked barefoot across a deck or patio and regretted it. Painting the deck a light color can be helpful, because lighter colors reflect the sun’s rays and darker hues hold the heat. But there’s one caveat: If that paint is oil-based, you may wind up with a hotter surface, even if it’s white.

“When oil-based paint is in the sun, it gets really hot, hotter than slate, because of its oil content. It’s best to avoid it,” Wilder says. For the same reason, teak, a popular material for outdoor furnishings and decking, shouldn’t sit in direct sunlight, because the wood also has a high oil content.

The easiest fix for hot deck or patio flooring? Throw down a light-colored outdoor rug.

10 Best Outdoor Patio Coolers 2021: Reviews & Buying Guide

Shopping for an outdoor patio cooler that will keep your drinks perfectly chilled?

You’ve come to the right place.

Patio coolers are cooler chests with a more stylish exterior compared to a traditional ice chest. You can get a patio cooler with a wooden, rattan or metal finish.

Patio coolers are also more practical than ice chests. Because the chest is usually on a cart or trolley, you don’t have to bend to pick a drink. The wheeled cart also makes it easy to move the full ice chest around.

What’s In This Buying Guide?

Contents

In this 10-minute buying guide, we review the best patio coolers. These coolers are not just great for your patio; you can also use one in your garden or weekend BBQ party. A patio cooler is also a great addition to your in-ground or above the ground pool deck.

Some patio coolers are portable enough for use on a picnic or camping trip.

We also give you tips on how to choose the best outdoor patio cooler based on style, capacity, and ice retention, among other factors.

Best Outdoor Patio Coolers 2021

1. Editor’s Top Pick: BLACK+DECKER Mobile Cooler Cart

BLACK+DECKER, Mobile Cooler Cart, 2 Door Seal Lid, Bottle Opener with Catch Basin, Bottom Storage Tray, 4 Rolling Wheels, White, BCC20W

We think the BLACK+DECKER mobile cooler cart is the best patio cooler for most people. It has enough capacity for most families as well as small to medium gatherings.

Pros

  • Enough capacity for most families.
  • 360-wheels provide easy mobility.
  • Includes drain and storage rack.
  • Insulation keeps ice solid for long.

Cons

Buy on amazon

Our Review

The BLACK+DECKER has a 20-gallon basin that holds enough drinks for a large family. It’s also big enough for a BBQ party.

The basin is insulated, so the ice stays solid for long and keeps your drinks perfectly chilled.

The legs and body of the cooler are made from stainless steel, so the cooler cart has a very solid and durable feel to it.

The door has a split design that makes it easier to access drinks from the cooler chest. Opening bottles is also easy, thanks to the built-in bottle opener and cap catcher.

As for maintenance, an integrated drain allows you to get rid of melted water without having to tip the heavy cart over.

The only complaint we’ve heard about the BLACK+DECKER mobile cooler cart is missing screws. It seems the manufacturer doesn’t include all the screws you need to assemble the cooler. Luckily, they are standard size screws, so it is easy to find matching once at your home or from a local store.

Bottom Line

The BLACK+DECKER mobile cooler cart is a great choice for families and individuals looking for a good-looking and well-made patio cooler that can hold plenty of drinks.

2. Best Wooden Patio Cooler: Merry Garden MPG-PC01 Wooden Patio Cooler

Merry Garden MPG-PC01 Wooden Patio Cooler

If you are looking for a rustic wooden patio cooler, we recommend the Merry Garden MPG-PC01 Wooden Patio Cooler. It’s finished in eucalyptus hardwood with an oil stain to protect it.

Merry Garden is a compact patio cooler, so it may not be suitable for large gatherings. But it’s perfect for family use at home, on picnics and at the beach.

Pros

  • Beautiful rustic cooler.
  • Space-saving design.
  • Perfect for picnics.
  • Ready to use – no assembling required.

Cons

  • Small capacity.
  • Many customers say it arrived with damage.

Buy on amazon

Our Review

Unlike most patio coolers, the Merry Garden MPG-PC01 does not sit on a roller cart. It’s simply a box with a wooden exterior.

The downside is that you can’t roll it around. But it’s small, so even when full, you should be able to lift and carry it.

The cooler chest has a capacity of 13.7 gallons. It’s not much, but it’s enough for most families. And because the cooler is compact, it fits easily, even in small patios and gardens.

It’s also perfect for out-of-home use on picnics, camping or at the beach. It fits easily in the trunk of most trucks, SUVs, and crossovers.

Style-wise, we love the wooden finish of the Merry Garden cooler. The exterior is eucalyptus hardwood with a protective oil stain. It looks good and lasts long.

The golden handles complete the rustic look of this cooler.

However, there seems to be an issue with how the Merry Garden cooler is packaged. More than a few customers have received a damaged cooler, and the damage usually occurs affects the same place.

If yours is damaged, the seller sends out replacements promptly.

Bottom Line

Though not big enough for a large party, the Merry Garden patio cooler makes up for its small capacity with good styling. We recommend it for individuals, families, and the occasional small garden party.

3. Best Compact: Rio Brands Entertainer Rolling Party Cooler

Rio Brands Entertainer Rolling Party Cooler (77 Quarts, Midnight Sands)

Looking for a compact patio cooler that won’t take up much space in your patio? We recommend the Rio Brands Entertainer rolling party cooler.

It holds fewer drinks than other patio coolers but is perfect for smaller spaces.

Pros

  • Great for small patios and gardens.
  • Beautiful modern styling.
  • Includes heavy-duty wheels for easy mobility.
  • Includes carry handles, bottle opener, cap catcher, and drain.
  • Detach base.

Cons

  • Ice doesn’t stay solid for long.

Buy on amazon

Our Review

If you have a small patio or garden space, the Rio Brands Entertainer is one of the best coolers. It provides a decent capacity (19.2 gallons) without taking up much space.

The cooler chest sits on a metal cart with heavy-duty wheels to move it around. Once the cart is in place, you can lock the wheels.

The chest is detachable from the base, making storage and transport easy. So if you want to use the cooler at the beach or anywhere away from home, you can easily fit it in the trunk of your car.

When detached, you can lift and carry the chest using the included carry handles.

As for styling, the Rio Brands cooler has a mostly black finish accented with silver accessories. It has a modern look that blends well with any patio or garden decor.

Accessories include a drain spout, bottle opener, and a cap catcher bin.

The one area where the Rio Brands cooler could be better is the quality of insulation. Several customers say the ice only lasts a few hours before it melts. So you have to keep refilling it.

Bottom Line

If you don’t have the space for a large patio cooler, the Rio Brands Entertainer is a compact alternative that holds a fair amount of drinks.

4. Most Practical: Tommy Bahama Stainless Steel Rolling Party Cooler

Tommy Bahama - 100 Qt Stainless Steel Rolling Party Cooler - 130 Can Capacity

The Tommy Bahama Stainless Steel cooler is not just an ice chest on a cart; it is a complete outdoor beverage station with everything you need to store and prepare drinks.

Pros

  • Plenty of extra storage.
  • Large ice chest – perfect for large parties.
  • Rollers for easy mobility.
  • Stainless steel construction with powder coating for weather protection.

Cons

Buy on amazon

Our Review

The Tommy Bahama cooler is more practical for your parties compared to most patio coolers.

To start with, it has a larger than average capacity – 25 gallons. It can hold plenty of drinks, including large bottles. Even after adding ice, there’s still a lot of space for drinks.

The storage space is also impressive. In addition to the ice chest, there’s a storage shelf underneath where you can load extra drinks that don’t need to stay chilled. You can also use this space to store things like limes, utensils, and other stuff you might need for your drinks.

You also get a flip-out side shelf that you can use to prepare drinks.

Other practical accessories include heavy-duty lockable casters, a drain plug, bottle opener, and cap catcher.

The Tommy Bahama cooler has a durable stainless steel construction, so you can expect it to last for a year. The powder-coated finish protects the cart from rusting.

All this practicality doesn’t come cheap. The Tommy Bahama, rolling party cooler, is one of the most expensive among our top 10 picks.

But we think it’s worth it. It’ll prove more useful during parties and will likely outlast other coolers.

Bottom Line

If you hold a lot of parties or spend a lot of time relaxing outdoors, the Tommy Bahama cooler is one of the most practical coolers you can get.

5. Largest Capacity: Igloo 49271 Party Bar Cooler

Igloo 49271 Party Bar Cooler – Powered by LiddUp

Need something that can hold enough drinks for a large party? We recommend the 31-gallon Igloo 49271 Party Bar Cooler. This cooler includes dividers so you can easily organize all the drinks you’ll put in it.

Pros

  • Extra-large capacity.
  • Interior LED lights.
  • Removable dividers.
  • Locking casters.

Cons

  • The lid is not insulated.

Buy on amazon

Our Review

At 31 gallons, the Igloo Party Bar cooler easily trumps other coolers in terms of capacity. It can hold more drinks than most patio coolers, making it the best choice for large parties and gatherings.

With that much space, keeping your drinks organized can be a problem. That’s why the Igloo cooler comes with dividers for better organization. You can separate your drinks by age or type. You can even mix drinks and foods.

The dividers are removable, so you can have one continuous space if that’s what works best for you.

Accessories for the Igloo cooler include interior LED lights (helpful when the party runs into the night), a bottle opener and cap catcher, drain plug, and locking casters.

The only thing we don’t like about the Igloo cooler is that the lid is not insulated. So the ice melts faster than in other coolers, especially if you leave it in direct sunlight.

That said, the ice should stay solid long enough to last through the party. You likely won’t need to refill the chest midway through.

Bottom Line

The Igloo Party Bar Cooler is the best portable bar for your home parties and events. It holds plenty of drinks and keeps them chilled for hours.

6. Best for Patios with Rattan Furniture: Giantex HW51578 108 Quart Rattan Cooler Cart

Giantex HW51578 108 Quart Rattan Cart Portable Wicker Cooler Trolley, Mix Brown

If you have Rattan wicker furniture in your patio, garden, or pool deck, get the matching Giantex Rattan cooler cart.

Pros

  • Matches well with Rattan furniture.
  • Large capacity.
  • Rustproof construction.
  • Plenty of extra storage.

Cons

  • No insulation – ice melts quickly.
  • Screws are not rustproof.

Buy on amazon

Our Review

The Giantex cooler is the best match for patios and gardens with rattan furniture. The body of the cooler, including the lid, has a rustic rattan finish. The bottom shelf is also made with a rattan wicker.

Under the rattan is a zinc plated metal sheet that is durable and rustproof.

The Giantex cooler has a 27-gallon capacity, making it a good choice for large families and parties.

It comes with extra storage space at the bottom where you can load extra drinks, foods, or utensils. You also get a couple of side shelves where you can prepare drinks plus hangers for wine glasses.

The cooler sits on a cart with roller casters for easy mobility.

The large capacity of the Giantex cooler is handy for parties and events. But it has a huge drawback – the cooler is not insulated. So ice melts quickly. When it is hot, it may melt before it even chills your drinks.

If you need to keep drinks cold for hours, forget the Giantex cooler. Unless the weather is already cold, you’ll have to keep replacing the ice.

Bottom Line

The Giantex rattan cooler loses points for lack of insulation. But we still think it looks great. If you don’t mind replacing the ice often, it’s a great addition to any patio with rattan furniture.

7. Best Modern Style: Best Choice Products 80-Quart Steel Rolling Cooler

Best Choice Products 80-Quart Steel Rolling Cooler Cart w/Bottle Opener and Catch Tray, Drain Plug, Locking Wheels

If you prefer a modern style, we recommend this 20-gallon rolling cooler from Best Choice Products. It has a contemporary minimalist look with a red and black finish.

Pros

  • Great style.
  • Large capacity.
  • Locking wheels.
  • Includes bottom tray, bottle opener, and cap bin.

Cons

  • Assembly is a bit challenging.

Buy on amazon

Our Review

The Best Choice Products patio cooler looks stunning. The contrasting red and black palette stands out in any patio or backyard.

The exterior is stainless steel, so it can withstand frequent outdoor use.

The ice bin is insulated, so it keeps ice solid for long. With a 20-gallon capacity, the bin can hold more than 70 cans or more than 50 bottles.

A drain plug at the bottom makes it easy to get rid of melted water, while a bottle opener makes things easy for your guests. Below the bottle opener is a cap catcher to prevent a mess of caps on the ground.

The ice bin sits on a metal cart with smooth-rolling casters. Two of the casters are lockable to keep the cooler from rolling away.

The cart also includes a tray for extra storage.

The only complaint we have seen from customers is regarding assembly. The wheels are a bit tedious to fit since they don’t align perfectly with the holes at the bottom of the tray.

Bottom Line

If rattan and wooden patio coolers are not what you are looking for, consider this modern-styled Best Choice steel cooler.

8. Best for the Outdoors: VINGLI Wagon Rolling Cooler

VINGLI 80 Quart Portable Rolling Ice Chest for Yard or Party, with Shelf, Pool with Bottle Opener and Holster

If you’d like a cooler you can take to the beach or park, we recommend the Vingli Wagon rolling cooler. Its monster wheels make it a great choice for rough and uneven terrains.

Pros

  • All-terrain wheels.
  • Large capacity.
  • Durable steel body.
  • Includes bottle opener and cap catcher.

Cons

Buy on amazon

Our Review

If there’s a 4×4 truck for coolers, this is it. The Vingli Wagon rolling cooler has big 10″ inflatable wheels that can conquer any terrain. It’s perfect for pulling along at the beach, on gravel, on the grass, and any rough ground.

A long handle makes it easy to pull the cart even when it is full.

The insulated bin has a capacity of 20 gallons. It holds enough drinks for a large family or group along with ice to keep everything chilled. A dual access lid lets you open the cooler box from any side.

As with other coolers, the Vingli Wagon includes a bottle opener and cap catcher.

The only issue we have with the Vingli cooler is its portability. Sure, it is easy to pull it along on sand or grass. But you are not going to pull it from home to the beach. And that’s where the cooler’s limitations become apparent.

For one, the cooler lacks side handles. Once you fill it with drinks and ice, it gets very heavy, and lifting it into the trunk of a car requires two or three people.

The other problem is fitting it in a car. Unless you have an SUV, crossover, truck, or large wagon, the Vingli cooler won’t fit. And even if it fits in the trunk of your vehicle, it doesn’t leave much space for other stuff you might need at the beach or park.

It would have been better if the cooler had a foldable or detachable design for easier transport. You can then fill it with ice and drinks when you get to your destination.

Bottom Line

Luckily, many people own large vehicles (crossovers are currently very popular), so ferrying the Vingli cooler around won’t be an issue, as long as you don’t give up space for extra stuff or the third row.

The size of the cooler and lack of carrying handles are also not a problem if you are planning to use it in your backyard.

9. Best Value: Clevr 80 Quart Rolling Cooler

Clevr 80 Qt Outdoor 45

If you are looking for a large, well-made patio cooler that doesn’t cost too much, we recommend the Clevr 80-quart rolling cooler.

Pros

  • Good value for money.
  • Durable steel construction.
  • Large capacity.
  • Includes drain plug, bottle opener, and cap bin.

Cons

Buy on amazon

Our Review

With a 20-gallon capacity and a steel body and base, the Clevr patio cooler is surprisingly affordable.

It has a powder-coated finish to protect it from the elements. Smooth-rolling casters and handles on each side of the cooler make it easy to move the loaded cooler around.

The polypropylene bin is insulated, so it keeps drinks chilled for long. Just make sure you keep it in a shady spot to prevent the ice from melting too quickly.

As for accessories, the Clevr cooler comes with a bottom tray, a bottle opener, and cap bin, and a drain plug.

Several customers say the drain plug is a bit leaky, but it’s nothing serious. You can try to tighten it or keep the cooler somewhere it won’t make a mess.

Style-wise, the Clevr cooler looks great. It has a retro hunter green finish that is especially perfect for a garden sitting area.

Bottom Line

The Clevr rolling cooler is cheaper than other patio coolers, but it works. It’s well made, has excellent insulation and we think it looks great as well.

10. Best Budget: BELLEZE 80QT Portable Rolling Cooler

ARKSEN 80 Quart Outdoor Rolling Patio Cooler Solid Steel Construction. Ideal for parties and other outdoor occasions, Rattan

The Belleze portable rolling cooler is another good choice if you are looking for an affordable but good quality patio cooler.

We love the rattan style, and the 20-gallon capacity isn’t too bad either.

Pros

  • Low price.
  • Beautiful rattan style.
  • Large capacity.
  • Durable steel frame.

Cons

  • No bottom tray.
  • A bit wobbly when full.

Buy on amazon

Our Review

The Belleze patio cooler has a 20-gallon capacity, enough for most families and even a sizable party. The ice chest is well insulated, so you don’t need to keep refilling it with ice.

The wide-opening dual access top lid makes it easy to access drinks and add more ice. When the ice melts, use the drain plug at the bottom to get rid of the water.

Accessories include a bottle opener and cap catcher. Notably, the Belleze cooler does not have a bottom tray, a common feature on other roller coolers.

If you were hoping for extra storage space at the bottom, we recommend the Clevr cooler instead.

Another issue with the Belleze cooler is that it feels a bit wobbly when it’s loaded. This could be because it doesn’t have a bottom tray, which acts as extra support in other coolers. Avoid pushing the cooler on the bumpy ground when it is full of drinks and ice.

When it comes to aesthetics, the rattan finish looks great. If you have rattan furniture in your patio or garden, the Belleze cooler will fit right in.

Bottom Line

For a low price, the Belleze patio cooler provides plenty of space for drinks, a durable steel frame, and a beautiful rattan finish.

Why Get a Patio Cooler

Giantex HW51578 108 Quart Rattan Cart Portable Wicker Cooler Trolley, Mix Brown

After all, a good old ice chest keeps drinks chilled just as well.

Getting a patio cooler is not just about keeping a drink cold. A patio cooler has several benefits over an ice chest. Here are the biggest ones.

  • Convenience: Because patio coolers are set on a raised cart, you don’t have to bend to pick up a cold one. Your party guests will appreciate this one.
  • Portability: An ice chest is great for putting in your car when going camping or on a road trip. But carrying a loaded one from the kitchen to the patio or garden is a pain. With a patio cooler, you simply push it on its casters.
  • Style: Ice chests are boring. They all come in the same rectangular shape and bland colors. In contrast, patio coolers come in a variety of interesting designs, including rattan, wooden, and metal. You can get a cooler that matches your patio perfectly. If you want to impress your guests, get a patio cooler.

Limitations of Patio Coolers

Rio Brands Entertainer Rolling Party Cooler (77 Quarts, Midnight Sands)

As convenient and good-looking as they are, patio coolers have their limitations and downsides.

The biggest one is the price. Patio coolers are generally more expensive compared to similar-capacity ice chests.

Another limitation is insulation. Some patio coolers maintain the temperature just as well as an ice chest. But some have thin or no insulation. Some patio coolers also have an uninsulated lid, which melts the ice faster, especially when the cooler is exposed to the sun.

There’s also the issue of portability. If you want a cooler you can carry to picnics, camping, the beach and on road trips, you are better off with an ice chest. It’s easier to lift and takes up less space in the trunk.

Giantex HW51578 108 Quart Rattan Cart Portable Wicker Cooler Trolley, Mix Brown

Capacity

The best capacity depends on how many drinks you need to put in the cooler. If the cooler is just for your family, a 20-gallon or smaller patio cooler will do.

If you hold lots of big parties, get a larger cooler. The biggest patio cooler among our picks is the Igloo 49271 with a 31-gallon capacity.

Insulation

Get an insulated patio cooler. It’ll save you time and effort, refilling the ice chest.

An uninsulated or poorly insulated cooler melts the ice quickly, meaning you have to keep adding more ice. A well-insulated patio cooler should keep ice solid for the length of a party.

Materials

Look for a patio cooler with a metal body and base. It’ll last longer and withstand the elements better. A plastic frame is also good as long as it is heavy-duty and UV-resistant. But the cart itself should be metal.

Note: Even if the patio cooler has a rattan or wooden exterior, it still should have a metal frame.

Style

The best style comes down to your tastes. Some people like the modern look of patio coolers with a metal exterior while others love the rustic style of wooden or rattan patio coolers.

Mobility

Casters are a must-have. They make it easy to move the patio cooler around, especially when it is loaded. Check that the casters are 360-degrees and that at least two of the wheels are lockable.

Side handles are nice to have. They make it easier to push the cart. If the patio cooler has a detachable ice chest, make sure it has side handles so you can lift and carry it like a normal ice chest.

Accessories

Here are the accessories to look for:

  • Bottle opener and cap catcher bin.
  • Drain plug.
  • Bottom rack for extra storage. Some patio coolers also have side shelves.

Bottom Line

Tommy Bahama - 100 Qt Stainless Steel Rolling Party Cooler - 130 Can Capacity

An ice chest is still the best option for cooling drinks and foods on the go. But if you want to enjoy chilled drinks at home in your patio, garden, or pool deck, a patio cooler is the best choice. A patio cooler is also great as a portable bar for home parties.

10 Best Outdoor Patio Coolers 2021: Reviews & Buying Guide

Looking for a patio cooler?

You've come to the right place.

When you are shopping for a patio cooler, you'll be drawn to the many styles and designs patio coolers come in, ranging from modern stainless steel roller carts to rustic wooden coolers.

But there's much more to a patio cooler than just the style.

Build quality, ice retention, and storage space are other important factors to consider when buying a patio cooler.

What's In This Guide?

In this in-depth buying guide, we recommend the best patio and outdoor coolers you can buy online. We considered things like durability, materials, price, and, of course, style in choosing our top picks.

We also explain the benefits of a patio cooler and give you some tips for choosing the right one for your needs.

If you prefer a good old ice chest instead or a thermoelectric cooler, read our reviews of the best 12V electric coolers & ice chests.

When Is A Patio Cooler Best?

Patio cooler

Patio coolers are great for, well . . . patios. They blend in well with patio furniture and look much better than an ice chest.

But it's not just about their looks – patio coolers are also very practical for outdoor use. Most are designed in the form of a raised trolley or stand that makes it easy to get drinks and foods out of the ice chest.

Most also come with wheels for easy mobility.

Despite their name, patio coolers are great for any outdoor setting to be it a backyard BBQ (handy for storing meats and other foods before they are cooked), a picnic, or even the beach.

If you need a nice-looking ice cooler you can travel with but think old fashioned ice chests are a bit unsightly, get a patio cooler.

Look for one with wheels so you can easily move it from the car to where you are setting up.

Our Review

The Black+Decker cooler cart has a beautiful contemporary style that blends well with garden and patio furniture.

The body and base of the cart are stainless steel, ensuring durability and weather resistance (no rusting).

The cooler basin has a 20-gallon capacity, which is as large as most patio coolers. You can fit dozens of cans and bottles inside, not to mention plenty of ice to keep everything chilled.

A drain makes it easy to get rid of melted water.

The cart can get pretty heavy when fully loaded. But you can still move it easily on your own thanks to the 360-degree wheels. The wheels are lockable to ensure the cart doesn't roll away.

The Black+Decker cooler provides additional storage space at the bottom in the form of a shelf. The shelf is lipped, so when you move the cart, whatever is on the shelf stays put.

You also get a built-in bottle opener and a cap catch bin below it.

Issues & Limitations

One issue several customers have brought up is regarding some missing screws. The cooler doesn't come with all the screws you need to assemble it.

But they are common sizes that are easy to find at a local hardware.

Bottom Line

The Black+Decker mobile cooler cart is a great choice for anyone looking for a nice-looking, big, and durable patio cooler.

2. Best Rattan Patio Cooler: Giantex HW51578 108 Quart Rattan Cooler Cart

patio cooler

Rattan coolers have a beautiful rustic look and go really well with rattan patio furniture. Our most favorite rattan cooler cart is the Giantex 27-gallon cooler cart.

Pros

  • Beautiful rustic style.
  • Large capacity cooler.
  • Casters for easy mobility.
  • Plenty of storage space.

Cons

  • A cooler box is not insulated – ice melts quickly.
  • Screws are not rustproof.

Our Review

One thing we love about the Giantex cooler cart, in addition to the beautiful rattan style, is the amount of storage it provides.

The 27-gallon bin is larger than in most coolers – you can pack lots of drinks, ice, and even some foods. The only addition we would have liked to see is dividers to make better use of the large volume.

There's also plenty of extra storage outside the bin. The largest is the shelf below the cooler box. Here you can place some utensils or additional food.

There are also hangers below the bin where you can hang wine glasses.

You also get a smaller shelf on either side of the cooler box. Each shelf can hold at least two 2-liter bottles.

Thanks to all that storage, the Giantex cooler is perfect for BBQs, outdoor parties, or a backyard family picnic. You can load it up in the kitchen with everything you need – drinks, fruits, utensils, etc. – and roll it outside.

The Giantex cooler has a durable steel frame. The exterior finishing is rattan with rustproof zinc-plated metal underneath.

Issues & Limitations

The cooler box is not insulated. Ice melts quickly, requiring frequent refills. This can be frustrating for BBQs and parties that stretch for several hours.

Another issue is the set of screws provided for assembly. While the patio cooler is rustproof, the screws are not. You may want to replace them with weatherproof screws.

Bottom Line

The Giantex cooler cart is a great choice for anyone looking for a large-capacity rattan style outdoor cooler.

3. Best Modern Patio Cooler: Best Choice Products Steel Rolling Cooler Cart

outdoor cooler

If you prefer a more contemporary style, we recommend the Best Choice Products steel cooler cart. It has an all-steel construction, clean lines, and a modern red & black finish.

Pros

  • Beautiful contemporary styling.
  • Large 20-gallon capacity.
  • Durable steel construction.
  • Lockable casters.
  • Storage shelf.

Cons

  • Wheels don't line with the legs, making assembly difficult.

Our Review

Many customers love the red and black combo of this patio cooler. It's eye-catching and looks great outdoors.

But the cooler is good for more than just its looks. It's very practical as well.

The 20-gallon bin can hold about 70 cans or 50 cold beverages. But it's hard to see a scenario where you need 70 drinks. A more realistic combo would be a dozen cans, a pack of beer, maybe two large bottles of juice or soda, ice to keep everything cool, and a bag of ice to add to the drinks.

The bin is insulated, which keeps the ice solid for hours. Users say they've found frozen ice two days or longer after they put it in.

The insulated bin not only keeps your drinks chilled, but it also reduces how often you have to refill the bin with ice.

There's more storage space on the shelf underneath the bin. You can also hang some towels on the large handles on the side.

For easy mobility, the cart comes with 360-degree wheels that you can lock in place to keep the cooler from rolling.

Issues & Limitations

The most common problem customers encountered was during assembly. The wheels don't align perfectly with the legs – you have to force them into place.

Clearer assembly instructions would be welcome.

Bottom Line

If you have modern patio furniture, this cooler from Best Choice Products will blend in great. It's also a good choice for anyone looking for a large and durable patio cooler.

4. Best for Large Gatherings: Igloo 49271 Party Bar Cooler

Igloo 49271 Party Bar Cooler

The Igloo 49271 is the largest outdoor cooler we found. At 31 gallons, it holds more cold beverages and foods than any other patio cooler, making it a good choice for large parties and gatherings.

It comes with dividers so that you can make the best use of all that space.

Pros

  • Extra-large bin.
  • Dividers for better organization.
  • Interior lighting.
  • Lockable wheels for easy mobility.

Cons

Check Price on Amazon

Our Review

If you frequently host family gets together or home parties, this Igloo cooler will make it so much easier to entertain your guests.

It holds plenty of drinks, meaning you don't have to keep adding more drinks. In most cases, you just need to fill it up once or twice.

We love that the bin is insulated, which keeps the ice solid for longer. When it melts, use the drain plug to get rid of the water. You can even connect a garden hose to direct the water somewhere specific.

The Igloo 49271 cooler is not large but also practical. Dividers ensure you make the best use of the spacious interior. You can separate drinks based on guest preferences and age.

You can also use some of the sections to store a bag of ice or meats for grilling.

By the way, the dividers are removable in case you want one large space.

When the party runs into the night, the Igloo 49271 has interior LED lights to make it easy for guests to grab a drink. The lights require 4 AA batteries, which are not included.

The Igloo 49271 cooler is set a bit low than other coolers. The lockable wheels and base help raise it off the ground, but it's not as high as conventional patio coolers.

The upside is that you can easily fit it into the trunk of a truck without disassembling it – perfect for picnics, camping, and road trips.

Issues & Limitations

Many customers have complained about the flimsy lid. However, it doesn't seem to affect the cooler's performance that much. It still keeps ice cold.

In fact, there's an option to remove the lid completely for easier access to drinks. The ice will still stay solid for hours.

So don't let the lid issue stop you from getting the Igloo cooler.

Bottom Line

The Igloo 49271 patio cooler is a solid choice for anyone who often hosts large parties and gatherings.

5. Best Steel Patio Cooler: Tommy Bahama Stainless Steel Rolling Party Cooler

outdoor cooler cart

Steel patio coolers are durable, can withstand rough outdoor use, and they look great. The Tommy Bahama rolling party cooler is our top pick for anyone who prefers the reliability and longevity of a steel cooler cart.

Pros

  • Durable stainless steel construction.
  • Large 25-gallon capacity.
  • Lots of extra storage.
  • Lockable casters.

Cons

  • Expensive.
  • Could use better insulation to keep the ice solid for longer.

Check Price on Amazon

Our Review

The Tommy Bahama stainless steel cooler is the heaviest among our picks. That's an indication of its durable construction.

And don't worry about moving it. The heavy-duty casters allow you to push it on your own, even when it's packed full of ice and drinks.

It's also big, with a capacity of 25 gallons. It's perfect for large parties.

There's a large storage shelf beneath the cooler as well as a flip-out side shelf. You can also hang hand towels on the large side handle.

Other convenient features include a drain cap to get rid of melted water and a bottle opener with a cap catcher beneath it.

Issues & Limitations

The Tommy Bahama patio cooler is understandably expensive. The stainless steel construction and extra-large capacity don't come cheap. If you are looking for a budget patio cooler, this is not it.

For the price, however, the manufacturer could have used thicker insulation. The cooler box has thin plastic walls that don't keep the ice solid for long.

Bottom Line

Looking for a large and heavy-duty patio cooler? The Tommy Bahama stainless steel cooler cartis a great choice.

6. Most Portable Patio Cooler: Merry Garden MPG-PC01 Wooden Patio Cooler

patio cooler

If you need a patio cooler, you can easily carry to picnics, camping, and other outdoor activities, the Merry Garden MPG-PC01 cooler is the most portable.

Pros

  • Highly portable – perfect for camping and picnics.
  • Rustic wooden finish.
  • Carrying handles.

Cons

  • Many reports of the cooler arriving while damaged.
  • Low capacity.

Check Price on Amazon

Our Review

Sometimes you want a patio cooler that you can use away from the patio.

The Merry Garden MPG-PC01 has a smaller capacity than most patio coolers, but that makes it perfect for picnics, camping trips, and road trips.

The 13.7-gallon cooler has a compact design that easily fits in the trunk of a car or truck with plenty of space left over for other stuff.

We love the rustic wooden exterior of the Merry Garden cooler. It is made out of eucalyptus and finished with an oil-based stain.

The plastic insert cooler is double-walled to keep the ice inside solid for longer.

Issues & Limitations

To enjoy this cooler's portability, you have to make do with the smaller capacity. At 13.7 gallons, the Merry Garden cooler holds enough drinks for small families.

An even bigger issue is one many customer have experienced. We are not sure whether it's the packaging or rough handling from the delivery company, but many customers have reported receiving a damaged cooler.

The hinges and the lid seem to be especially vulnerable.

Luckily, Amazon can send you a new one if yours comes broken, though some customers say even the second one arrived broken.

The manufacturer needs to find a more secure way to package the cooler.

Bottom Line

The Merry Garden cooler is a great choice for anyone looking for a compact patio or garden cooler they can use at and away from home.

7. Best for Small Parties: Rio Brands Entertainer Rolling Party Cooler

Rio Brands Cooler

With a capacity of 19.2 gallons, the Rio Brands cooler is just the right size for small parties. It's large enough to hold all the drinks you need and compact enough to fit in the corner of a small yard or balcony.

Pros

  • Compact, space-saving design.
  • Lockable wheels.
  • Detachable base.
  • Bottle opener and cap catcher.

Cons

  • Insulation is a bit thin.

Check Price on Amazon

Our Review

If you need a patio cooler for just your family or small parties, you don't need something big that will take up a lot of space.

The Rio Brands rolling party cooler is compact but with enough capacity to hold about 100 cans.

We love the midnight black finishing it comes in, and the contrasting silver handles and bottle opener.

Something else we love is the detachable base. The cooler sits on the base without any screws. So, anytime you want to detach it, you simply lift it off the base.

This is handy when you want to put the cooler in the car for a picnic or store it without the base.

To keep the ice cold for hours or even days, the cooler box is insulated, and the bi-fold lid has an injected foam construction.

The Rio Brands cooler doesn't have a shelf for storage, but it does come with a bottle opener, a cap catcher, carry handles, and a drain spout.

Issues & Limitations

The insulating wall around the cooler box is thinner than we would like. On hot days, it doesn't keep ice solid for long.

Bottom Line

The Rio Brands cooler is a great choice if you are looking for a compact patio cooler for small gatherings.

8. Best Value: BELLEZE 80QT Portable Rolling Cooler

Portable Rolling Cooler

The Belleze portable rolling cooler is our top value pick. It has a large capacity and a beautiful rattan finish but costs less than comparable patio coolers.

Pros

  • Good value for money.
  • Large capacity.
  • Rustic rattan exterior.
  • Lockable wheels for easy portability.

Cons

  • No extra storage.
  • Lack of cross braces makes the legs wobbly when rolling the cart.

Check Price on Amazon

Our Review

The Belleze patio cooler looks more expensive than it is. The rattan finish gives it a beautiful rustic look that blends well with garden or patio furniture. It looks especially great if you have rattan furniture.

The cooler is easy to put together. An Allen wrench is included for assembly.

The insulated cooler box has a 20-gallon capacity, enough for about 100 cans. Though the insulation is not as thick as in other coolers, it keeps the ice frozen for at least a day.

The caster wheels allow for easy portability even when the cooler is full of drinks. Two of the wheels are lockable to keep the cart from rolling off.

The build quality is pretty good. The frame is steel, and the cooler feels like it'll last a long time. The double doors provide full access to the interior.

The Belleze cooler comes with side handles, a drain plug, a bottle opener, and a cap catcher.

Issues & Limitations

Be careful when rolling the cooler outdoors. Avoid rolling it on rough surfaces or uneven ground. Here's why.

Unlike most patio coolers, the Belleze cooler doesn't have a lower shelf. The shelf provides extra support for the legs.

Without it or some form of cross braces, the legs on the Belleze cooler tend to wobble, especially when the cooler is full, hence the need for extra caution.

Bottom Line

The Belleze patio cooler is a great choice if you are looking for a bargain on a large, good quality patio cooler.

9. Best Budget: Clevr Rolling Cooler

Clevr Rolling Cooler

If you are looking for a patio cooler on the cheap, try the Clevr 80 Quart rolling cooler.

It has a large ice chest, durable steel construction, and a beautiful rattan finish, but costs less than other comparable patio coolers.

Pros

  • Low price.
  • Lockable wheels.
  • Large capacity for the price.
  • Durable steel construction.

Cons

Our Review

There isn't much you have to sacrifice to get this affordable patio cooler.

It has most of the best features of pricier coolers, including a long-lasting steel frame, an insulated cooler chest, and a lower shelf for storage and stability.

It also comes with locking wheels for easy portability as well as a bottle opener and cap catcher.

The only area it could do better is ice retention time. Premium patio coolers can keep ice frozen for days; the Clevr cooler manages, at most, just one day. The insulation is a bit thin.

This is not necessarily a downside. Most people buying a patio cooler only need it to keep drinks frozen for only a few hours.

The cooler chest is plenty big. It can easily fit 100 cans or a mixture of cans and bottles. You can also throw in a bag of ice to add to drinks.

The lower shelf provides extra storage and stabilizes the cart to keep it from wobbling.

Issues & Limitations

The main complaint we've heard from customers is the leaky drain plug. If your cooler leaks, we recommend not leaving the ice in the cooler for more than 24 hours.

But most users were able to find a way to stop the leaking.

Bottom Line

The Clevr cooler is cheap for its size and quality. We highly recommend it for anyone looking for a low-cost but good quality patio cooler.

10. Best All-terrain Cooler for Back Yards: VINGLI Wagon Rolling Cooler

VINGLI Wagon Rolling Cooler

Most patio coolers have small wheels that work well on smooth surfaces like pavement or flooring.

If you have a lot of backyard parties or need a cooler you can take to the beach, we recommend the VINGLI Wagon Rolling Cooler.

Pros

  • All-terrain wheels.
  • Large capacity.
  • The long handle makes it easy to pull the wagon behind you.
  • Bottle opener and catcher.
  • Affordable.

Cons

  • Insulation could be better.

Check Price on Amazon

Our Review

VINGLI is the off-road version of cooler carts. It spots a lifted wagon body and large 10" inflatable wheels.

Like an off-road vehicle, VINGLI is designed to go where other coolers can't: your bumpy backyard, the beach, picnics, camping, and any outdoor place were rolling a conventional cooler would be a problem.

Two of the wheels are lockable so you can park the cooler on a slope without worrying it will roll away.

The long handle makes it easy to pull the cooler behind you.

There are two styles available: one with a rattan finish (most popular pick) and another with a black metal finish. Both have a steel body, so the best choice comes down to your tastes.

The 20-gallon cooler chest is insulated, though insulation is not as good as in other coolers. It keeps ice solid for about 24 hours, less if you are using it out in the sun.

The chest is big enough to fit dozens of cans and bottles, enough for the entire family or a large party.

You can also use VINGLI to keep things warm for about 8 hours.

Issues & Limitations

Insulation around the cooler could be better. Ice stays frozen for about 24 hours before it starts melting.

But unless you are planning to take it on a 3-day camping trip, 24 hours is plenty enough for most people's needs.

In any case, you can drain the melted water using the drain plug and add more ice into the chest.

Bottom Line

The VINGLI Wagon Rolling Cooler is a great choice if you need a cooler cart you can easily roll to your backyard, a beach or a picnic site.

Pros and Cons of Patio Coolers

Portable Air Conditioners Pros and Cons

Patio coolers are mostly great. But they have their downsides too. Here's a look at the pros and cons of patio coolers.

Pros

  • No more bending: Patio coolers typically come with a rolling base that raises the cooler chest high enough that you don't have to bend when picking a drink. Big convenience for the elderly, those with back problems, and us lazy types.
  • Easy portability: Ever tried to lift and carry a full cooler chest, even a small one? Yeah, it's a pain. With a rolling patio cooler, you just push the cart wherever you want to be it on the patio, beside the pool, or to the backyard.
  • Easy drainage: Most patio coolers come with a drain plug at the bottom that makes it easy to get rid of melted water in the chest.
  • They look good: Cooler chests are great, but most are ugly. Patio coolers have the 'ugly' chest inside and use a more appealing finish on the outside, such as rattan (our favorite), wood, or plain metal. A patio cooler is essentially a part of your patio or garden furniture.

Cons

  • Reduced portability: With a conventional chest, you can quickly put it in the trunk of your car for picnics and camping trips. Patio coolers are harder to carry around because of the rolling base. But there are some with a detachable base; look for one of these if you want a patio cooler you can travel with.
  • Reduced insulation: Most patio coolers don't have as good insulation as conventional cooler chests. They keep ice frozen for less time, usually 1-3 days.
  • Pricier: You can get a good quality ice chest for well under $100. Most patio coolers, even smaller ones, start at $130 and can reach $500 for large premium cooler carts.

Buying Guide: What To Look For in an Outdoor Patio Cooler

Outdoor Patio Cooler

1. Capacity

Similar to a conventional ice chest, capacity is the most important factor to consider when choosing a patio cooler.

Standard patio coolers have a 20-gallon cooler, enough to hold 70-100 12 oz. cans. Go higher if you are looking for a cooler that can handle large parties or smaller if you need a patio cooler for just yourself or you and your partner.

2. Construction

stainless steel patio coolers

The best patio coolers are made with stainless steel. It is durable and weatherproof.

Make sure the cooler is sturdy and has lockable wheels for easy portability.

3. Finish

Rattan-finished patio coolers are popular, but you can also find coolers with a plain metal exterior or a rustic wooden finish.

4. Storage

Patio cooler storage

Extra storage on a patio cooler is handier than you think. A bottom shelf can be especially useful for storing utensils or some extra drinks that don't need to be chilled.

Some patio coolers also come with side shelves and a bar or handle to hang a hand towel.

5. Insulation

Almost all patio coolers you'll find in the market have an insulated ice chest. But it's always good to check. Some just have a metal box with no insulation. Ice melts within no time.

Also, check the quality of insulation. If you want the ice to stay frozen for more than a day, get a patio cooler with thick insulation and an insulated lid as well.

6. Detachable Base

Patio cooler detachable base

The ability to detach the cooler from the base makes it easier to travel with the cooler or store it away.

7. Drain Plug

A drain plug is a must-have. It makes it easy to get rid of melted water from the cooler chest. Some coolers have a hose-compatible drain plug that allows you to connect a hose for easier draining.

8. Accessories

pure outdoor cooler

Considering what most people put inside the cooler, two accessories that every patio cooler should have are a bottle opener and a cap catcher.

The cap catcher ensures your guests don't leave caps lying all around.

Final Thoughts

Best Outdoor Patio Coolers

Patio coolers are not just good for the rustic décor they add to your patio; they are also very practical.

You can wheel the cooler where you want, carry more drinks and ice than you would with a conventional cooler, and there's no more bending to pick a drink.

FAQs

Can I use a patio cooler to serve ice cream outdoors?

Yes, you can. The challenge will be keeping the ice from melting. Patio coolers don't have the same good quality of insulation as traditional chest coolers.

We recommend getting a well-insulated patio cooler and add some ice packs or dry ice to the cooler to help keep the ice cream frozen.

How do I protect my patio cooler from weathering?

Most patio coolers are designed to withstand weather elements including sunshine and rain to a degree.

But too much exposure can still damage them. We recommend keeping the cooler under some sort of shade like under a tree or in the patio. If you often use the cooler in our backyard or at the beach, consider getting a weatherproof cover for it to keep out sun, snow and rain.

How do I make my own DIY patio cooler?

If you find store-bought patio coolers too expensive, you can make yours using a wooden box. Build a box with a lid, then insert a cooler chest into the box and you have a well insulated DIY patio cooler.

You'll need to attach the cooler lid to the wooden box lid and remove the cooler handles.

For better access, consider giving the box legs so it sits at an easy-to-reach height. If you want, you can also make the box wheelable for easy portability. Other features you can add include a storage shelf, side shelves, storage hooks and a bottle opener.

How long does a patio cooler keep ice frozen?

It depends on how well insulated the ice bucket is. With good insulation, the cooler can keep ice frozen for days regardless of the weather.

Patio coolers with thin or no insulation only manage to keep ice solid for a few hours or a full day at most.

The type of ice you use also matters. A block of ice is going to melt slower compared to cube ice.

To keep ice frozen and your drinks cold, remember to keep the cooler in a cool place away from direct sunlight and keep the lid closed.

Styrofoam_CoolerI found this great styrofoam cooler at Wal-Mart.  I ordered it site-to-store, and it was ready for pick-up in about 4 hours!

Ryobi_Compound_MiterI used my miter saw to make the cuts.  But, if you aren’t ready to purchase one, you can use the handsaw below for this project!

Front_and_Back

sidesStart by building the surround for the cooler.  I am going to share the measurements that I used for mine but, keep in mind that you need to measure and cut as you go.  Board sizes vary and climates can affect the boards as well.

4 – 1×4 @16 1/2″

8 – 1×2 @25 1/4″

Kreg_Jig

I attached the boards together using my Kreg Jig pocket holes!  Above, I circled all of the places that I drilled the pocket holes and notice that I drilled pocket holes into the 1×4’s only so some 1×4’s have pocket holes going towards both ends to attach to the 1×2’s.

Cooler_SurroundHere is the surround, assembled with Kreg Jig pocket holes and Gorilla Glue wood glue!

Next, I just nailed them to the surround with my new Brad Nailer!

Ryobi-AirStrike-Cordless-Brad-Nailer

LegsI put a few nails on the outside and a lot on the inside.  I also used lots of wood glue :)

Attach_LegsNow, just drop the cooler inside the surround.  it should be a snug fit!  If not, it’s not a big deal, we are going to brace the bottom!

The top should be flush with the top of the surround

Insert_Coolerand you will have a little space below.

TrimNow to make her pretty!  Use 1×2 boards to trim the top, making the edges flush with the surround.  You will have an over-hang between the legs.  Measure for these cuts to get them exact and attach them with brad nails and wood glue!

Now for the top!

Trim_for_TopUse 1×2 for the trim on the lid and drill pocket holes into the ends of the 16 1/4″ boards.  Attach with pocket hole screws and wood glue.

Measurements:

2 – 1×2 @25 1/4″

The_TopNow, just attach the trim to the top with pocket hole screws and wood glue.  The top of the boards should be flush with the trim.

We need a drain still!

Flange_and_StopperI had the idea to use a sink drain kind of contraption and this was SOOOO easy!  I purchased a cheap sink flange and rubber stopper with a chain.

Insert_Sink_FlangeJust twist the flange into the spot where you want the drain (make sure the 2×3’s on the bottom are out of the way).  Twisting it will cut through the styrofoam.

Cut_StyrofoamI had to follow up with my knife a bit but this technique made it easy to get the exact size hole that I needed for the flange!

Silicone_Sealant

Cover_With_SealantNext, I “gooped” silicone sealant around the flange and dropped it back inside the hole.  Push it in snug and wipe the sealant that seeps out with a wet paper towel.

Attach_TopTo attach the top of the cooler to the wooden lid, just use a generous amount of silicone sealant to the top of the styrofoam lid and press it into the wooden lid.

Now for the finish!

Rustoleum_Dark_WalnutI brushed on 1 coat of Rust-Oleum Dark Walnut stain

RustOleum-Spar-Varnishand followed up with 3 coats of Rust-Oleum Spar Varnish in satin!  This is a great finish to protect outdoor pieces!  Make sure to give the suggested drying time between coats!

Picture-31To get the distressed edges on the finish, I just used my Corner Cat!  It’s super easy to use and it’s light-weight!  I just ran over all of the corners and edges with it.

I got to excited to get this together and didn’t take a picture of the hinges.  They are super easy to install though!  I just two at the back of the lid.

U_BoltI just predrilled (using a drill bit that was the same thickness as the bolt) and hammered it into the holes ;)  If it isn’t a snug fit, I would use Gorilla Super Glue Gel to secure it.

I attached my hooks and handle and in the ice and drinks went ;)  It’s time to party!!!

Cooler patio

One challenging dilemma for some people that love to host frequent social gatherings in their backyard is how to keep drinks cool and within reach of themselves and their guests. It can be tedious walking back and forth from your kitchen just to grab a drink. If you want to enhance your backyard space for entertaining guests, then a backyard patio cooler would definitely prove to be a great investment for you. Patio coolers do a lot more than just serve as a standard ice chest. With each different patio cooler comes handy features that make life much more convenient. Patio coolers are growing in popularity because they not only make outdoor parties better they also add a touch of style and elegance to any formal or social gathering in any home setting.

Contents

There are some key factors that make a backyard cooler good and suitable for a certain type of person’s needs. To help you pick out the best patio cooler you can get, I’ve compiled a guide list of the most important things to look for in your patio cooler.

The Cooler Capacity

You will want enough space for the ice and ice packs along with the drinks. Having a generous space for more ice is recommended in order for you to maximize the cooler’s cooling time and capability. If you aren’t sure how much space you need, then I would recommend you size up. It is always more convenient to have extra space to store your drinks. Getting a patio cooler with a capacity of around 20 gallons is a decent choice. It can hold anywhere between 70 to 100 cans. If you prefer a compact patio cooler for smaller family uses, a cooler with a capacity of a little above 10 gallons is good.

Weatherproofing Capabilities

If you are investing in a patio cooler, it is also essential to make sure it is durable and is fit to face any weather conditions. Make sure that the body, base, and overall build of your patio cooler is made with tough weather-resistant, and/or weatherproof materials. Make sure that the patio cooler is also not prone to rust and corrosion.

Portability (Wheels or No Wheels)

The ease of portability is an important factor when choosing a patio cooler. If you have tried lifting a full cooler chest before, then you know how hard it can be. Having a rolling patio cooler is convenient as you can just simply push or pull it around. Rolling patio coolers with lockable wheels are a great choice for elderly people and those with back problems. The lockable feature ensures your cooler stays steadily in your chosen place and won’t be a cause of accidental tripping. However, if you do not need much portability, then a stationary patio cooler might work well for you. There are plenty of great options for backyard patio cooling without wheels.

Its Style

The style and look of your backyard patio cooler are what helps enhance its surroundings. There are a wide variety of colors, shapes, and designs that are sure to meet your preferred look. It is important to consider what type of feel you are looking for, whether it’s a smart, rustic, or vintage vibe you want to express.

Insulation Ice Chest (will the ice melt quickly or slowly?)

The more insulated the patio cooler is, the longer it will keep the ice and drinks cool. Insulation is probably the best feature you should consider first before buying. Great insulation in a patio cooler ensures that your drinks stay cool and that the ice does not melt during your party or social gathering. If you want the cooler to keep the ice frozen for more than a day, then get a patio cooler with thicker insulation. An insulated lid may also prove useful.

There are various extra accessories and features that some coolers have that may prove useful in different ways. Accessories such as a patio cooler cover is a great extra item that may help prevent future wear and tear on your item. Other accessories can help keep your patio cooler last long, while some extra (not necessarily important) accessories are designed to make life a little more convenient for you.

While the Picnic Plus 72-Can Insulated Tub Cooler with Stand doesn’t make a great table stand (the top is soft and not ideal for setting things on), it does do a great job as a patio cooler.

Not to mention the price is dirt cheap for the value you’re getting.

What Is A Patio Cooler?

A patio cooler is a patio table with a built-in ice chest and is intended to be a stylish alternative to a traditional drink cooler.

Unlike a regular cooler that might look unsightly if left outside, these outdoor drink coolers are designed to complement your patio design while providing cool refreshment year-round.

What To Look For In A Good Outdoor Patio Cooler

There’s plenty of options to choose from when selecting a patio cooler, including size, material, and design. Here are a few of the important points you should consider.

Types of Outdoor Patio Coolers

While the majority of patio coolers provide the same essential function (serve as a cooler and table), there are a few unique styles you can choose from.

Rolling Cooler Cart Style

Permasteel 80-Quart Portable Rolling Patio Cooler

The most common patio cooler type is the rolling cooler cart style. It’s essentially an ice chest with a tabletop surface on wheels. They can hold a TON of ice and drinks, keeping them very cold. They are perfect for a patio party or other large gatherings.

One of the nicest features of this type is its portability. They can be wheeled out with very little effort whenever you need them, and just as easily wheeled back into storage.

The Permasteel 80-Quart Portable Rolling Patio Cooler is a great example of a rolling cooler cart-style table. It has an enormous 80-quart capacity cooler and a stylish powder-coated finish that’s weather and rust-resistant.

Side Table / Hot Tub Style

Another popular type of outdoor cooler is the Side Table / Hot Tub Style style. This cooler table design looks like a typical outdoor side table but has a pop-up tabletop that reveals a cooler within.

Their strongest feature is the ability to naturally blend into your patio furniture and not stand out like a typical drink cooler. It’s also the perfect height to be placed alongside a jacuzzi (about 33 inches high) for easy access to drinks while having a soak.

The Keter Pacific Cool Outdoor Bar Table is an excellent example of a side table style patio cooler table.

Portable Cooler Style

Picnic Plus 72-Can Insulated Tub Cooler with Stand

The final design we’ll discuss is the portable patio cooler style. This type is generally made of a soft polyester material that easily folds up when not in use allowing you to take it on the go or store it easily.

While these types aren’t the most stylish design, they are some of the most useful, especially if you like to travel.

The Picnic Plus 72-Can Insulated Tub Cooler with Stand is a great example of this type of cooler. It holds an incredible 72 cans of beverages and is perfect for tailgating or picnics.

Portability

Wheels are a very important consideration if you plan to move your cooler around when in use.

When you have a cooler full of ice, it can weigh upwards of 150 pounds. Moving it around (without two large guys) would be nearly impossible. That’s when it’s good to know that your cooler has wheels.

Another great portability feature of many of these patio coolers is the ability to detach the cooler box from the base and use it as a portable ice chest. The Rio Brands Entertainer Rolling Party Cooler is a great example of a model with this detachable feature.

Reliability

Patio coolers are an outdoor furniture investment that should be expected to last for many years.

Since these units will be typically left outdoors year-round, the quality of their construction and building material is extremely important. The last thing you want is for your patio cooler cart to rust or break down after just one or two seasons.

The best models are constructed with a weather-resistant resin material or stainless steel. Both of these materials provide heavy-duty construction strength and look attractive, too.

What is the best patio cooler for you?

As you can see, there are plenty of patio cooler models to choose from, but which one is the best for you?

If you’re looking for something that can hold LOTS of beverages, a rolling cooler, like the Rio Brands Entertainer Rolling Party Cooler could be the right choice for you.

If you need a patio cooler with a sturdy tabletop, a side-stand cooler like the Keter Pacific Cool Outdoor Bar Cooler Table is a good choice.

If you plan to do a lot of traveling with it, get a Picnic Plus 72-Can Insulated Tub Cooler with Stand. It has plenty of capacity and can go anywhere easily.

I hope you enjoyed this review of the best outdoor patio coolers, and have a wonderful time enjoying whichever model you choose!
